Off Modern 4/12/10

On December 4th Off Modern host their first big Saturday night blow out at Corsica Studios before Christmas rears its ugly head.

LIVE:

EGYPTIAN HIP HOP
According to one video documentary, EHH were bought together through the power of the Egyptian Hip Hop God, with all four band members merely acting as vessels for his musical greatness.

DELS
Recently signing a 3 album deal with the infamous Big Dada and working with the likes of Joe Goddard, Micachu, Kwes & Sampha, Dels is hot to trot, and it’s this long list of electro giants that help him form the almighty smack you get when listening to tracks like ‘Shapeshift’ & ‘Trumpalump’.

VONDELPARK
The surrey enigma that is Vondelpark returns to play for us live in Room two.

SAMPHA
Extremely talented producer & artist Sampha returns after his last improtu performance with Phantom last May. Sampha must not be missed. A true musical genius with a voice that melts butter.

THE HOOD INTERNET
The ‘minor’ internet phenomenon that is Chicago based duo the hood internet come all the way from the US of A to deliver their heavily blogged about, hip hop mashups. These two normally play in front of thousands. I think its safe to say they will be tearing the roof off little ol’ corsica.

Hammer and Tongs Q&A

I’ve always had this thing where I’m really good at remembering details on pointless subjects. Useless trivia about minor film actors, the humble former occupations of now famous frontmen, the names of the most obscure celebrities. I often, to my shame, pretend not to know the name of some god awful X Factor contestant when really I do. I don’t even watch the X Factor (that much), I just have to read one scathing article about it or have one conversation and I can remember the names. The same is true for the film director Garth Jennings. It was a name I first heard a couple of years ago when listening to the treasured and now sorely missed Adam and Joe Show on BBC 6Music. Joe was away for week, leaving Adam with a stand-in, his director buddy Garth. This new voice slotted in perfectly with the light-hearted and geeky nature of the show; Garth was witty, interesting and immediately likeable and I wanted to find out more about him. Hammer and Tongs was a name I had heard of before too, though never fully investigated, so imagine my delight when on Googling ‘Garth Jennings Hammer and Tongs’ I came across some of the most original, inventive and downright hilarious music videos ever made.

NAIL THE CROSS / DAGGER PATHS

This weekend we’re engaging in a two days of No Pain In Pop based fun. On Friday we’re playing records at the launch of Forest Sword’s Dagger Paths EP (buy here) at CAMP on Old Street. And on Saturday it’s NPIP’s 3rd annual South of the River blow-out, Nail the Cross. It’s taking place at the Bussey Building on Rye Lane. The line-up is incredible; Actress, Darkstar, Becoming Real, Vondelpark, /D/R/U/G/S, Jam City and of course, Off Modern. Don’t miss out, get tickets here.

To give you a taster of just how good Forest Swords are, here is Visits, resplendent thumping percussion underpins gloomed out reverberations and pained vocals.

UNREAL

I recently interviewed Toby, the man behind Becoming Real, for The Stool Pigeon. He’s a lovely guy, his new EP, featuring erstwhile member of Roll Deep, Trim, is out now on Moshi Moshi. Its incredible. Buy it.

FLATS SCHMALTZ

What the fuck are Flats, exactly? They’ve been around for just a few months but are already ridden with the ravenous maggots of press hype, most articles cropping up in the music noosepapers are implying the sun’s reseated itself in the tight side of their pimpled, booze-sore punk rock behinds. As with any hardcore act that catches the mainstream’s glare, though, questions remain as to why? What sets Flats apart from all the other dropouts in thrall to speed (both kinds) and Crass? Is it because they look better in T-shirts than your average Converge fan band? Does that make them posers? Are they in the NME because the singer’s dad is Alan McGhee? And with Flats’ star currently trending harder than a mock-gothic wanker in Catch on a Friday night, will the attention only end up negating the anti-fashion point they say they are making?

OM FILM CLUB: C’etait un Rendezvous

One thing the Futurists and UK first-wave punkers The Damned had in common was an all-consuming love of speed. Claude Lelouch’s ten minute long short-film, C’etait un Rendezvous, is also about the dizzying vertigo of V12 chaos that speed can induce, but imagine if Beaudelaire and Breton had some balls, and instead of drifting down hashish boulevards they’d gone mad on the fumes of the petrol.

C’etait un Rendezvous may have started out as a bet to use up some leftover film, but it ends by proving that the most exhilarating form the derive can take is a 140mph blow-out down the Champs Elysees.

ALMOST ISLAND

With winter seriously getting me down I was flicking through the odds and ends of my hard-drive and found this, Almost Island by Fair Ohs, recorded live at Off Modern. This is what summer sounds like, and in lieu of any foreseeable sunshine for the next six months, it’ll have to do.

And Now for Something Completely Different

“Met a girl from out of space, she had a shiny nipple in the middle of her face. When I hit her with my human charms, she fell right into my human arms.” – Turbogeist are an exciting combination of eccentricity and ferrocity and their debut single has got our pulse racing. Alien Girl is being released digitally in December and there’s a date at Off Modern in the pipeline. We’ve decided to book them in while we can; Zane Lowe played them earlier in the week and we’re already embarrassed he got there before we did.

Angus McCrum

Angus McCrum is an old friend of mine and, less importantly, a brilliant illustrator. Taking a break from the compulsive piss-taking that dominates our early-twenties friendship I found out why he is always talking about Southern Railway posters.
